Jim McGuire

Jim McGuire

evolutionary agent

Weird Charlotte: Are you originally from Charlotte, or did you come here from somewhere else? If you came here from somewhere else, where was that, when did you land here, and why?

Jim: I'm a mental construct. I'm not bound by normal time and space co-ord-i-nuts. None of these questions apply to me. Sorry.

WC: Of all you've contributed to the cultural fabric of Charlotte, what are some of your personal favorites?

Jim: As an evolutionary agent my job description is to steer would-be rational thinkers toward kaos and radical expressionism. As a society, we've been trained to behave and leave entertainment up to the "professionals". My contribution to the cultural fabric includes involvement and association with miscellaneous movements including: the Zero Ward Art Collective, Tacky Party, Burning Man festival, Big Puffy Yellow, Abraxus Inc., East Side Junior League, QZ and the Visible Trash Society, Tranformus, Carnevil, Amps 11, and other miscellaneous organizations I really can't name because U.S. governmental agencies may send those black helicopters to get me.

WC: What strengthens your dedication to do what you do, in spite of the fact that Charlotte has not yet developed a critical mass of creatively-attuned people?

Jim: It's easy to be different here, and the hunger for abnormality makes who I am valuble to the cause of the evolutionary big picture. In short, I feel needed, and that feeds my overgrown artistic ego.

WC: What sometimes discourages you about Charlotte and makes you dream of living somewhere else? And where would that somewhere else be?

Jim: You can only be where you are. Why go elsewhere when your mind can project anything on any landscape? Is one really defined by place? Maybe. I create who I am at every moment. Location is irrelevant.

WC: What would help make Charlotte a more vibrant cultural city?

Jim: Is this a question, or are you asking me to agree that Charlotte should become a more culturally vibrant city? I celebrate the fact that it's a cultural void. I like to create starting from a blank canvas. If it became culturally vibrant I might have to move to Gastonia. If it got hip here I wouldn't have anything left to complain about.

WC: What can we do right now to make Charlotte a more vibrant cultural city?

Jim: If I was to be a part of culture production right now I suppose I could finish this questionnaire and then maybe finish the 10 or so art films I started. I really believe it's about producing art 24/7.

WC: Let's say there's some creative person out there who's considering moving to Charlotte. If you could say one thing to them, what would it be?

Jim: Dude, you've just hit the jackpot! Boatloads of opportunity here!
