Addie of Addie's Jamaican Cuisine

Addie was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica. She moved to New York City in 1971 where she raised three boys and one girl, who have now brought her twelve grandchildren. While in New York, she ran three restaurants in Brooklyn, two simultaneously. Here's what she has to say to Weird Charlotte.

Weird Charlotte: So how do you like it here?

Addie: I miss New York badly, but I'm not gonna go back to Brooklyn. I lived there for 34 years. I'd really like to be closer to my grandchildren in upstate New York.

Weird Charlotte: When did you come here, and why?

Addie: I moved here a year and a half ago because I had a friend down here and I felt there was opportunity. I was stayin' over South Park with a wonderful friend of mine, Mr. Johnson. I don't drive and I miss my train, but he take me everyday. He has a wonderful family too, and they treat me so well, like family.

Weird Charlotte: What's something you like about Charlotte and something you don't like?

Addie: I love the atmosphere and the houses, but I don't like the quietness. I'm accustomed to seeing a lot of people on the street. I don't like the quietness, but the people are well-mannered.

Weird Charlotte: What do you want people to know about your business?

Addie: Sometimes we have entertainment, and we plan to open a bar soon. Right now we sell beer and wine. We'll be open on Mondays too starting in June. We sell the best West Indian and American food in Charlotte. Come get a plate here – you'll see.
