Jul 31, 2009Fri6:00 PM Lark & Key Gallery and Boutique Lark & Key Gallery features woodcut prints by Dan Allegrucci and pottery from Ronan Peterson, on view from July 29 – August 30, 2009. Opening reception, Friday July 31, 6-9pm.

Charlotte, NC based artist Dan Allegrucci’s preferred medium is woodcut printmaking. The gouge used to carve his wood blocks creates a physical, unforgiving line that is well suited for an honest, sometimes harsh, examination of a subject. His most recent work explores the connection between ancient and modern times with a strong interest in the relationship between the experiences of individuals and the larger history of civilization. Dan’s work offers fragments of a vague narrative and invites viewers to complete or extend the stories and relationships.

Ronan Peterson’s ceramics are an amalgamation of the influences of his youth, the distinct seasonal changes of the North Carolina mountains along with the color and fantasy of his father’s comic books. His functional earthenware vessels draw inspiration from the alternate worlds of those comics and the growth and decay of the nature. Most of his work is wheel thrown then altered and he carves textures, patterns and drawings into the surface. Ronan translates and abstracts trees, budding leaves, lichen encrusted bark, and insects in hopes to present a ceramic cartoon interpretation of some of the overwhelming visual and tactile information present in the nature. Ronan lives and works in Chapel Hill, NC.

Nov 21, 2009Sat11:00 AM McColl Center for Visual Art Drawn: Crossing the Line

This group exhibition explores work by artists whose primary medium is graphite, pen and ink and charcoal. Precisely and exquisitely executed, the subject matter ranges from small, quiet, surreal landscapes to abstract renderings of vegetables to large photo realistic interpretations of the body. Drawn provides an overview of various styles and themes which reflect different images seemingly in contrast with each other, however upon closer inspection, the viewer discovers a common thread; balance.

PAST EVENTS
Jul 12, 2009Sun1:00 PM Historic Rosedale Plantation The Charlotte Folk Society, with co-sponsors Historic Rosedale & the Storytellers Guild of Charlotte, invites the community to our 4th Annual Old-Time Music Jam and Ice Cream Social. Enjoy an old-fashioned summer Sunday afternoon with your family. Activities on the Rosedale grounds are free and include storytelling, open acoustic jam sessions, a slow jam, a song circle, clogging demonstration, and, of course, ice cream – as long as it lasts. House tours are available for a special fee: 2 adults/$5.00. What a perfect combination – local history and cultural traditions of music, dance, and storytelling! Bring a lawn chair or blanket and an instrument, if you play. Listeners are always welcomed! In the case of rain, this event will be cancelled. Call Wanda Hubicki at 704-563-7080 and visit www.folksociety for more information.

This project is made possible, in part, with funding from the Arts & Science Council and the North Carolina Arts Council, an agency of the Department of Cultural Resources, and the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.

Support is also provided by Foskoskies Neighborhood Café, 2121 Shamrock Drive, in east Charlotte.
Jul 10, 2009Fri7:15 PM Lynx train, Scaleybark Station to Woodlawn Station So it's take two of the Lynx bubble car. Once again, we will board the Lynx train at Scaleybark Station, ride it to Woodlawn Station, blowing bubbles all the way. The more people we can get to attend this the better, so try to pencil it in and get time off work if you can.

The specific details are pretty much the same as last time:

Specific details: Meet at the the Scaleybark Station at 7:15 pm, or earlier. It's a park and ride and we will meet up at the platform headed outbound, toward I-485. We'll board the 7:33 train. Everyone will need to buy a pass, which can be done at the station itself. A one-way ticket costs $1.50, and a round-trip costs $3.00 (the machines accept debit and credit cards). They do check periodically, and if you don't have a ticket there's a 50 dollar fine and a potential misdemeanor charge. We will be inevitably drawing attention to ourselves so, HAVE A TICKET!

We will exit the train at the next stop, the Woodlawn Station. It's up to you to figure out your own transportation. Obviously if you buy a round-trip ticket it won't be an issue. Otherwise, perhaps people can carpool between the two stations. Also, it's BYOB (Bring Your Own Bubbles). We'll try to have extras, but no guarantees. Try to bring them in a bag of some sort, so it's not immediately suspicious.

Jul 3, 2009Fri7:00 PM Green Rice Gallery We all know what Alice saw when she went through the looking glass, now it is our Green Rice Artist’s turn to show the public what wondrous things they might see in theirs! Opening Friday, July 3rd, Green Rice will host a new show entitled Through the Looking Glass. As Lewis Carroll stated, “The world is a looking-glass, and gives back to every man the reflection of his own face. Frown at it, and it will in turn look sourly upon you; laugh at it and with it, and it is a jolly kind companion”. The show will run from July 3rd to August 2nd and will feature over 10 artists with broadly varying styles of work. From oils to acrylics, from woodwork and mixed media sculpture, be prepared to expect the unexpected!
"If it was so, it might be; and if it were so, it would be; but as it isn't, it ain't. That's logic." -Tweedlede
Jul 3, 2009Fri6:00 PM Lark & Key Gallery and Boutique Lark & Key Gallery presents True Lineage, featuring works by fine art quilts by Jen Swearington with featured potter Jennifer Mecca. On view from July 1-26, opening reception Friday, July 3 from 6-9pm

Jen Swearington has been drawing as long as she can remember and sewing since the sixth grade. Today Jen combines her love of both with her line of clothing and scarves as well as one-of-a-kind fine art quilts. The quilts are often inspired by books and movies, or simply glimpses of life around her. Sometimes autobiographical, they offer elements of nostalgia with juxtapositions that can be meaningful or random. Jen takes this traditional art form and gives it a modern twist through the use of less traditional materials such as gold leaf and shellac.
Potter Jennifer Mecca spent many weekends as child observing and participating in the traditions and rituals of her paternal Italian-American extended family. Among the most prevalent of these traditions was the preparation and serving of elaborate meals. This served as the foundation for her interest in utilitarian pottery and her love of creating elaborate surfaces and forms. Working primarily in porcelain, Jennifer creates wheel thrown and altered forms that are organic in nature, giving them an added dimension through the use of her own fluid line drawings.
