The space now occupied by The Nevitt Building used to be a small stretch of single-storey storefronts occupied by three weird little businesses: 23 Studio, Pat's Tavern and The Wrightnow Gallery. In late July of 1992, Steve Holt (a.k.a. Lepton Neutrino) was returning work to artists from a gallery location on North Davidson Street after the previous owner had gone belly up and walked out. The property owner, Pat Nevitt, offered Steve the space and, with a six month commitment from a small group of fellow artists, he took the space. The plan was that after six months the gallery would either fly or die on its own merits. The goal was to create a venue for emerging art and to bring the creative fire that accompanies it to North Davidson Street. 23 Studio opened in August of 1992 and the six month experiment turned into an emerging art venue that survived for ten years.
There'll be more on Lepton Neutrino's NoDa empire of Pat's Tavern, 23 Studio and The Wrightnow Gallery, but for now you'll just have to be happy with this slideshow of his photos.
